Our advanced surgical training models simulate all critical elements of a specific procedure. The materials included have biomechanical characteristics similar to those of human tissue, and behave in a similar manner during cutting, manipulation, suturing, and electrocautery. Relevant anatomical elements like bowel, vasculature, fat, and other features of internal viscera are included. The advanced trainers have full medical imaging compatibility (CT scan, 2-dimensional and 3D ultrasound) and simulate true operative metrics of performance (blood loss, tumor margins, operative and ischemia time, amongst others).

  • Kidney Tumor

    KIDNEY PATHOLOGY PHANTOM

    The VIOMERSE kidney pathology phantom (KPP) consists of a synthetic left flank including skin, muscle, spine, 3 ribs, kidney with upper and lower tumors, ureter and hollow renal pelvis and calyces with a partial staghorn calculus. The ureter exists below the hip and permits installation of fluid to further expand the collecting system mimicking hydronephrosis. The renal collecting system is also accessible from the ureteral extension tubing permitting ureteroscopy and drainage into a collection bag during nephoscopy and lithotripsy.

    PROCEDURES:

    The KPP is an ideal training model for training in renal ultrasound. The phantom has been validated using multiple transabdominal ultrasound probes which demonstrate clear imaging of all the pathological components. Multiple procedures can be performed on this phantom including renal and tumor biopsy, renal collecting system access (by US-guided puncture), complete percutaneous lithotripsy including stone break up, ureteroscopy and lithotripsy, resection of mucosal based tumors and percutaneous kidney tumor ablation (cryotherapy, RFA). The phantom is fully customizable including kidney tumor, stone and mucosal lesion size and location. The phantom can be ordered with a CT or MRI file. 

  • PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY PHANTOM

    VIOMERSE’s partial nephrectomy phantom is a full procedural training model for a robotic-assisted or laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. The phantom simulates the approach, control of the renal artery, exposure of the lesions with realistic resection using standard minimally invasive instruments. The phantom comes in a procedure tray and contains a kidney with tumors located at the upper and lower poles, a renal hilum with artery and vein, pelvis, calyces, ureter, and perinephric fat. The kidney parenchyma simulates real tissue allowing for renorrhaphy.  Other tumor locations, including an endophytic lesion involving the collecting system are available upon request.

    PROCEDURES:

    The partial nephrectomy model allows for training in robot set-up, perinephric fat dissection, identification of the renal vessels and clipping of the artery, excision of two or more tumors, and closure of kidney (renorrhaphy) and collecting system if involved. Functional bleeding models are available upon request. 

  • PROSTATE PHANTOM

    VIOMERSE’s Prostate Phantom is a disposable hydrogel model for the simulation of multiple medical procedures. Utilizing advanced imaging (CT and MRI) or real-time transrectal ultrasound, the user can train on different biopsy techniques (MRI-fusion and transperineal), rectal spacer insertion, brachytherapy, focal therapy, and fiducial marker placement. The VIOMERSE Prostate Phantom contains optional MRI- and ultrasound-visible lesions allowing for annotation, fusion and biopsy with extraction of normal tissues and confirmation of lesion targeting. The product consists of the rectum, perineum, prostate, urethra, seminal vesicles, bladder base and optional internal lesions in anatomically correct locations. All of the tissues mimic the properties of human organs. An MRI DICOM file is included for use with fusion systems and focal therapy targeting.

    PROCEDURES:

    Ultrasound and MRI-Fusion Biopsy

    The prostate phantom is ideal for training in transrectal and transperineal biopsy. Internal lesions are visible on the included MRI DICOM file and apparent with ultrasound. The prostate phantom enables a completely functional biopsy procedure with removal of highlighted hydrogel tissue samples confirming successful targeting and training validation. The phantom has been customized to function well with all the biopsy platforms currently available. Its unique design also allows repeated biopsy punctures because of its proprietary components.  

    Rectal Spacer Insertion

    The accurate and biologically relevant anatomy of the VIOMERSE prostate phantom makes it the optimal training tool for injection or insertion of rectal spacers, including hydrogel, hyaluronic acid and balloons. The realistic rectal prominence (at the apex) enhances the training by requiring proper needle steering and guidance, and the realistic injection dynamics mean that spacer deposition creates space between the prostate and rectum, confirming proper placement.

    Brachytherapy

    The prostate phantom can be used to simulate a complete LDR or HDR brachytherapy procedure, including pre- and real-time planning with computer optimization. The phantom was designed to allow identification of seed locations and, when combined with CT and MRI post-implant dosimetry, allows for dose calculation to the prostate and organs at risk making it the preferred tool for residency and fellowship training programs.

    Focal Therapy

    The phantom has been validated with multiple focal therapy platforms including cryotherapy, brachytherapy and HIFU (both Sonoblate and Focal One).

    Research and Development

    Several companies have selected the VIOMERSE prostate phantom to aid in the development of their treatment platforms. These companies recognize the unique properties of the phantom and often request customization to enhance their specific needs.  

  • BLADDER OUTLET OBSTRUCTION PHANTOM

    VIOMERSE's Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO) Phantom is a dynamic endourology trainer for a wide variety of treatments and devices for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer. The phantom enables lifelike resection, enucleation, implantation, and similar procedures for the relief of bladder outlet obstruction. The phantom contains key anatomical landmarks including the penile urethra, verumontanum, obstructing prostate lobes with capsule, bladder neck, bladder with 500 ml capacity and ureteral orifices. The BOO Phantom system has been designed to collect the irrigation fluid common to endourology procedures. Flow from the bladder is controlled by an adjustable proprietary system. Drainage from the simulated urethra is efficiently managed with the attachable funnel. The phantom has been designed to be economical and comes with a reusable case and drainage system with a replaceable gel block containing the anatomy. 

    PROCEDURES:

    The BOO phantom has been tested with most of the following procedures: holmium and thulium laser enucleation (HoLEP, ThuLep), laser vaporization (Green light), TURP, water vapor (Rezum), urethral expansion (UroLift and iTind) and transurethral focal ablation (MRI). 

  • BLADDER TUMOR

    The VIOMERSE bladder tumor phantom contains the urethra, prostate, bladder neck, trigone, and bladder with mucosa, smooth muscle, and serosa. It has the same design as the BOO phantom without an obstructing prostatic urethra. This phantom is fully customizable and can contain multiple tumors of various configurations some of which can fluoresce. 

    PROCEDURES:

    Bladder biopsy and TURBT can be performed on this model. If fluorescent tumors are inserted then blue light cystoscopy with resection with margin confirmation can be accomplished. TURBT is a complicated procedure to become proficient at making this model ideal for resident training. Novel therapies such as intralesional injection, tumor base injection, chemotherapy applications can be researched and taught with the phantom.
